Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s traditional purification and detoxification therapy, and in Sanskrit, Panchakarma translates to 'Five Actions', referring to five cleansing treatments designed to flush out toxins. This program is tailored for 5-8 days at home with a few visits to our Ayurveda clinic

Spring and Autumn are traditionally recognised as the optimal seasons of the year for a deep cleanse and 'detox' of our bodies.

After a hot and humid Summer, now is the time to prepare the body for the cold months by clearing out accumulated heat and storing nourishment in the deep tissue layers to sustain energy through the Winter.

Please send us an enquiry for a booking at our Freemans Bay clinic.

What is involved:

1. Mono diet

For the first 2-3 days leading up to your Panchakarma therapy, we recommend following a mono diet of Kitchari for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We will provide the recipe which you can follow at home. It is an easy and quick meal based on rice, seasonal vegetable and Ayurvedic spices. We recommend using the Pitta Spice mix with cooling properties at this time of the year.

2. Ayurvedic medicine

Take 1/2 tsp of Trikatu powder and 1 tsp of Triphala powder  with warm water and some honey (optional) twice daily 15 minutes before breakfast and dinner. This will prepare the colon for detoxification and strengthen the Agni (digestive fire). In Ayurveda these two processes are called Depana and Pachana.

3. Ayurvedic treatments

On day 3-5 you will come to our Ayurveda clinic to receive various treatments tailored to your health history and goals you would like to achieve through Panchakarma. These are the options:

Shirodhara: A blissful therapy beneficial for sleep disorders, stress relief, headaches, depression and anxiety. Warm medicated oil is gently poured on the forehead in a rhythmic, steady stream. The treatment begins with a traditional Indian head massage to sensitise the nerve endings on the skull. Shirodhara is an experience of timelessness and its effects are often indescribable.

Abhyanga Massage: Ayurveda’s traditional massage therapy based on a specific sequence of massage strokes with a dosha specific medicated oil to rejuvenate and fully replenish physically and mentally. Accumulated toxins and impurities will be flushed out to help you feel transformed and uplifted after this treatment.

Nasya: This treatment is effective in restoring clear breathing and reducing headaches or other problems caused by sinus challenges. After a head, neck and face massage, steam is applied to the sinus area to "ripen" the site for receiving treatment. Then warm, special medicated oil called Anu Taila is inserted into each nostril followed by a herbalist steam compress massage. Nasya is applied in chronic sinusitis, migraine, hormonal imbalances, lack of smell, feeling depressed, lack of enthusiasm, hair loss, epilepsy and facial paralysis. Especially during COVID times, Nasya supports the respiratory system and helps the immune system establish a shield. It brings clarity to all sense organs and promotes brilliance of the mind. Nasya is most effective when given in series of 3-5 sessions 4 weeks apart.

Garshana: A traditional Ayurvedic dry massage with natural silk gloves that refreshes and stimulates the skin and lymphatic system to release accumulated toxins and enhance blood circulation. The exfoliation of dry dead skin layers generates a glow and vibrance.

Marma Therapy: A subtle treatment utilising traditional essential oils to restore balance through vital energy points. These oils will be selected according to your constitution (dosha) and have a calming effect on the mind and nervous system. Based on pulse diagnosis specific Marma points will be stimulated or pacified.

4. Laxative Day

Day 6 will be your laxative day which aims to flush out all the accumulated and loosened up toxins and impurities from the digestive tract. We will provide certified organic castor oil which you will drink at home. Instructions will be provided how to manage your purgation.

5. Matra Basti (medicated enema)

On day 7 you will self-administer an enema at home with medicated Aswagandha oil. We will provide all the necessary equipment and the oil.

6. Rejuvenation

On Day 8-10 you will slowly introduce light meals and take Rasayanas. These are Ayurvedic herbal formulas such as Chyawanprash, Amalaki Jam, Brahmi Jam or Ashwagandha Jam that help to rebuild your strength, digestive fire and supports your immune system.
